Door to Door Update
September 16, 2011 § Leave a Comment
I’m going to start knocking on doors on Monday. In the spirit of “going big or going home,” I’m going to try to devote 6 ‘days’ (really 2 – 3 hours in the early evening or on weekends) to 5 neighborhoods across the city. If you are a New Orleanian, or if you know New Orleans well, please vote on where I should go by clicking on the ‘neighborhood polls’ link above. Here’s where the polls stand now:
Gentilly: Neighborhoods receiving votes (# of votes): Gentilly Terrace (1), Gentilly Woods (1), Pontchartrain Park (1)
Bywater: Marigny (2), Florida (1), Desire (1)
Mid-City: Iberville (2), Bayou St. John (1), Gert Town (1), Seventh Ward (1)
Garden District: Central City (1), East Riverside (1), St. Thomas (1), Touro (1)
Uptown: Hollygrove (3), Uptown (2), West Riverside (2), Freret (1), Broadmoor (1)
It’s important to me, and to the vision for the school, to get as broad and diverse a base as possible for this outreach. I don’t want to go to 5 neighborhoods with similar demographics.
Call me out on this if you like, but I need to make an executive decision of where to start. I also want to start with a familiar neighborhood first to get the hang of this ‘door to door’ empathy thing. And since you should really know where you come from before you know where you’re going, I’m going to start in my home neighborhood of West Riverside in Uptown. All apologies to Hollygrove, which currently has 3 votes to West Riverside’s 2. You’ve got my word that I’ll get back to you in the future.
Please continue to vote on neighborhoods in the other districts to influence where I’m going to go. Check back this weekend for my thoughts on what the heck I’m going to say once someone comes to the door.
